Now that I have been connected with a regional CCW course and intro shooting program for a few months, I have learned a bit about this subject.

Item number one, most guys buy too little or too much gun for their significant other. Mouse guns (unless a requirement for physical reasons) are just not ballisticlly appropriate item. Sure, they kill but they do not provide enough power to stop. If she is too weak to stand at least a 38 SPL or 9mm P, a 22LR is only slightly better than nothing and superior to 25, 32 and in my experience 380 or 9 Mak. At least shooting a 22 is fun and cheap. Most 380 blow backs have more apparent recoil than a locked breach 9mm. 9 Mak is better but it is no longer cheap and is also generally pretty big for a non-9mm P.

When he goes to the store and buys a semiauto that has a slide she can't work, the ulterior motive is that he wants a new gun! Sneaky but effective. If the gun is for her, she should be both able to load the mags and work the slide. Generally, this is just not done before they arrive to find out they have the wrong gun.

Item two, most of my female students do not enjoy the increased recoil of a 40 S&W, 357 SIG or 45 ACP. They also object to the supersonic crack of a 9mm P.

Third, they generally do best with a six shot 38 SPL. They show up sometimes with a J Frame, shot five shots with their eyes closed and then complain about the pain. I switch them to a six shot and away we go for the last of the lesson.

But, if RPD and the other LEO agencies can train their female officers to operate a semiauto in whatever, we can too. It will just take a few trips to the gym and about forty hours of personal instruction. A lot of significant others do not wish to spend that much time and energy.

My own SWMBO is very competent with her Dad's old S&W M19 2.5" RB at under 7 yards. She goes once a year and is good with it. But as a teacher of young midget people, she could not carry it with her to school!

Ideally, I think the best carry option for a non-dedicated female is a 38 SPL (loaded with +P) with about a 3" barrel in K Frame and a 2" in J Frame. Aluminum for the K if you are really luck and steel for the J!

These are just my experience. Your mileage may vary.
